AN ANALYSIS OF SPEECH ACTS PRODUCED BY ENGLISH TEACHERS IN CLASSROOM TEACHING AND LEARNING PROCESSES AT SMA NEGERI 2 MENGWI IN ACADEMIC YEAR 2016/2017

Abstract

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian qualitatif yang bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan dan menjelaskan (1) jenis - jenis tindak tutur yang diucapkan oleh guru-guru bahasa inggris (2) bagaimana tindak tutur yang diucapkan dapat disadari dari ucapan – ucapan guru dan (3) fungsi pedagogis dari tindak tutur yang diucapkan oleh guru bahasa inggris dalam proses belajar mengajar dalam ruang kelas di SMA Negeri 2 Mengwi pada tahun ajaran 2016/2017. Subyek dari penelitian ini adalah dua guru bahasa inggris. Data penelitian ini diperoleh melalui hasil observasi dan interview dan dianalisa menggunakan Miles and Huberman (1994) interaktif data analisis. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa guru menggunakan tindak tutur berupa directives, representatives, commisives dan expressives dalam proses belajar mengajar. Tindak tutur kata yang paling sering digunakan adalah directives (55.22%), sementara tutur kata yang jarang digunakan adalah commissives (0.65%). Ada 28 inti ilokusi yang dipergunakan oleh guru dalam proses belajar mengajar. Ditemukan juga bahwa guru lebih sering menggunakan tindak tutur kata langsung daripada yang tidak langsung dalam bentuk kalimat deklaratif, interogatif, imperatif dan esklamasi. Fungsi pedagogis dari tindak tutur yang diucapkan guru memiliki tiga fungsi yaitu, lingustik, manajerial dan instruksional.

This research was a qualitative study which aimed to describe and explain (1) the types of speech acts produced by English teachers (2) how teachers’ speech acts were realized in utterances and (3) the pedagogical functions of teachers’ speech acts produced by English teachers in teaching and learning processes in the classroom at SMA Negeri 2 Mengwi in academic year 2016/2017. The subjects of this study were two English teachers. The data of this study were collected through observation and interview and analyzed by following Miles and Huberman’s (1994) interactive cyclical model. This study found that the teachers produced directives, representatives, commissives, and expressives speech acts in the classroom teaching and learning processes. The most frequently used speech act was directives (55.22%), while the least frequent speech act was commissives (0.65%). There were 28 kinds of illocutionary forces performed by the teachers in teaching and learning processes. Furthermore, the teachers were found to use more direct speech act than the indirect ones in the form of declarative, interrogative, imperative and exclamation. The pedagogical functions of the teachers’ speech acts were broken into three functions, namely linguistics function, managerial function and instructional function.
