In terms of assessing English language, the students need to be assessed on 4 (four) skills which are listening, reading, speaking, and writing. The process of assessment could be very tricky if the teachers do not have sufficient Language Assessment Literacy (LAL). It is because the government, through Kurikulum Merdeka, promotes the learning process as essential as the learning products. Teachers need to know all their students’ English learning journey, so they will not face confusion to determine the assessment scores in the end. In Indonesia, generally female EFL teachers have double roles as wife or mother at home and as a teacher in school. This study explores a female EFL teacher’s experience with non-permanent teacher status in describing her LAL. This study will also investigate female teacher’s challenges faced during the application of assessment in the EFL classroom. A narrative inquiry research with mixed-method data collection was employed to have in-depth understanding of the teacher’s experience. The result showed the participant’s LAL category was at a fair level. The reasons could be limited time factor, double roles, and limited information for getting seminar/workshop/training on the assessment.

Keywords : female efl teacher, language assessment literacy, narrative inquiry
Amelia Kartikawati Copyright (c) 2023 Kartikawati https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2023-12-11 2023-12-11 30 2 10.23887/ls.v30i2.68805 PRAGMATICS AND MULTIMODALITY IN INTERPRETING POLITICAL DISCOURSE IN JOE BIDEN'S VICTORY SPEECH https://ejournal.undiksha.ac.id/index.php/JJBI/article/view/68518
This study aimed to interpret political discourse using a pragmatic multimodality approach to the text and video of the victory speech of the 46th President of the United States, Joe Biden, using linguistic and gestural analysis using Searle's speech act theory, Perrine's speech act theory, and gesture interpretation. After that, the combined analysis of the three were classified into the function of political discourse which includes communicative, emotive, incentive, motivational, phatic, metalanguage, and aesthetic functions. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative method. The findings on speech acts show that assertive speech acts dominate speech with 61%, followed by expressive (14%), directive (11%), commissive (9%), and declarative (5%) speech acts. Meanwhile, findings on figurative language show that there are 7 figurative languages found in speech, namely synecdoche (24%), symbol (21%), personification (21%), hyperbole (11%), metaphor (11%), simile (9%), and apostrophe (3%). The combination of speech acts, gestures, and figurative language with the function of political discourse mostly refers to emotive function and motivational function, which shows Joe Biden's political discourse leads to the act of evoking the audience’s emotion and motivating the audiences related to the United States national movement under the leadership of Joe Biden in terms of maintaining his power as the president of the United States of America.
Ayu Mayang Sari Ati Sumiati Copyright (c) 2023 Ayu Mayang Sari, Ati Sumiati https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2023-12-11 2023-12-11 30 2 10.23887/ls.v30i2.68518 INTERACTIVE PATTERNS OF THE OPENING STATEMENT IN THE DEFAMATION CASE TRIAL OF DEPP VS HEARD 2022 https://ejournal.undiksha.ac.id/index.php/JJBI/article/view/68507
In light of the interactive aspects of a monologue speech, this study intends to examine the opening statement by the plaintiff’s lawyer, Ben Chew, in the trial of the Depp versus Heard Defamation case in 2022. Utilising Searle’s Illocutionary Acts and Hyland’s Stance and Engagement Models which was modified by Chaemsaithong, and the qualitative descriptive method, the writer can elaborate on how the interactive patterns can be discerned through the utterances presented by the lawyer. The finding shows 68 utterances dominated by 46% representative acts and 40% commissive acts, while the least occurrences are 7% of expressive acts and 7% of directive acts. Thereafter, it is also found 91 stance markers in the form of 50% attitude markers and 13% first-person pronouns, and 54 engagement markers in the form of 26% second-person pronouns, 10% reported discourse, and 1% questions. Through those interactive devices, the lawyer negotiated his representations within the opening statement at three levels: narrative, interpersonal, and personal self. Those negotiations are operated simultaneously as interactive means for presenting his proposition and identity as a lawyer while engaging rapport with jurors. Therefore, persuading them to be on the same page with the lawyer’s point of view, in which he stood on the plaintiff’s side in the trial.
Adelia Ikawati Ati Sumiati Copyright (c) 2023 Adelia Ikawati, Ati Sumiati https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0 2023-12-11 2023-12-11 30 2 10.23887/ls.v30i2.68507
