Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the duration of soaking coconut fiber in sappanwood extract on color intensity and color fastness to soap washing on cotton fabrics. To assess the effect of lime as a fixator on soaking coconut fiber with sappanwood extract on color intensity and color fastness to soap washing on cotton fabrics. The research method includes the process of wood extraction, soaking coconut fiber, and dyeing. The fixation process is carried out after dyeing with a dipping technique. Testing includes color intensity measured using a UV-2401 PC spectrophotometer and color fastness to soap washing using a gray scale standard. The results showed that soaking coconut fiber produced brighter colors compared to without soaking. Dyeing on soaked and unsoaked coconut fiber has the same color fastness value as washing soap. Lime fixator affects color intensity by increasing color brightness. As for the color fastness to soap washing, both samples given lime fixator and those without showing differences, indicating the ability of lime to maintain the color fastness of the dye that has been absorbed into the fabric. Overall, longer fermentation period and lime fixation contributed to deeper color intensity and better brightness, respectively. Coconut fiber soaking significantly affects the color intensity, while lime acts as an effective fixator to maintain color fastness to washing.
