IDENTIFICATION ON CHARACTER EDUCATION VALUES OF THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THE SUZANNE COLLINS’ “THE HUNGER GAMES (2008)”

Abstract


 

Character education is an important matter that need to be concerned by every teacher in Indonesia as discussed in law number 86 in 2017. Therefore, a media is needed to teach character education to the students. This research mainly discussed about the character education values that possessed by Katniss Everdeen, the main character in the novel entitled “The Hunger Games” that written by Suzanne Collins which in line with the character education values from ministry of education and culture (2017). This research was designed in the form of descriptive qualitative study. From the characterization of Katniss, she has 24 characters that build her as the main character in the novel. From those 24 characters, 22 of them are the sub values of the character education values from ministry of education and culture (2017) namely Peace loving, Tolerance, Sincerity, Not imposing own will, Environment loving, Excellence, Patriotism, Obedient the law, Discipline, Hard-working, Mental toughness, Determined, Creative, Courageous, Cooperative, Democratic, Caring, Voluntary, Honest, Loyal, Fair, and Responsible. It can be concluded that the character education values from ministry of education and culture (2017) are reflected in Katniss’ characterizations. This make Katniss’ characterization can be used as a media to teach character education value to the students.
