Demographic Variables and Adolescents’ Science Academic Engagement in Ibadan, Nigeria

Abstract

Science academic engagement among scholars has become a flowering attention particularly among researchers due to the benefit attached to science related discipline. The present studies therefore considered demographic variables and adolescents’ science academic engagement. Two hundred and twenty- seven (227) adolescents were randomly selected at Ibadan using Simple random sampling techniques. Researchers’ self-design instrument tagged Science academic self-efficacy, motivation science academic engagement and their demographic variable which include gender, age, religion, home type, parental educational qualification were used for data collection and percentage, frequency, mean and standard deviation and t-test analysis were used for data analysis. Result revealed that the hypothesis stated that there is no significant difference on adolescents’ science academic engagement based on home type (intact and non-intact home) is not accepted (t=3.042; df=225, p<.05). Also, the hypotheses that stated that there is no significant difference on Adolescents science academic engagement based on school type is not accepted. (t=5.201; df=225, p<.05). Results revealed that there is significant difference on adolescents’ science academic engagement base on the school type (public and private). However, participants did not significantly difference on science academic engagement on the bases of parental qualification, gender, age and religion. Base on the above, following recommendations were made: religious organization should intensify efforts at sensitizing all stakeholders particularly the students on the important of engaging on science academic programmes, non-literate parents should also encourage to provide science enabling environment to their wards. Science academic engagement should be fostered among the students regardless of their gender, chronological age should be considered for students’ class placement and so on. However, this study is limited and may be conducted using larger population both private and public.
