THE CULTURAL EXPERIENCES OF THE ENGLISH TEACHER VOLUNTEERS IN BUMI SEHAT’S YOUTH CENTER UBUD

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki pengalaman budaya yang dialami oleh sukarelawan guru bahasa Inggris dan gejala syok budaya yang dihadapi oleh sukarelawan guru bahasa Inggris di Bumi Sehat’s Youth Center. Peneliti menggunakan metode fenomenologis dan pendekatan kualitatif untuk mengetahui jawaban permasalahan dari penelitian ini. Data diambil dari tiga sukarelawan guru bahasa Inggris melalui wawancara dan kuesioner. Analisis tersebut menunjukkan bahwa ada sepuluh pengalaman budaya yang dialami oleh sukarelawan guru bahasa Inggris di Bumi Sehat’s Youth Center. Relawan guru bahasa Inggris mengalami pengalaman budaya yang mengacu pada kejutan budaya (fisik, kognitif atau perilaku) saat mereka masuk dalam budaya atau lingkungan baru yang dimana lingkungan mereka berbeda dengan kota asal mereka. Kesepuluh pengalaman budaya yang dialami oleh sukarelawan guru bahasa Inggris adalah makanan yang berbeda, dua masalah orang Bali, lingkungan, transportasi, perbedaan budaya, masalah tidur, depresi, laju kehidupan, dan iklim. Di sisi lain, relawan guru bahasa Inggris mengalami gejala syok budaya dalam dua minggu pertama. Semua relawan guru bahasa Inggris merasa rindu rumah dan salah satu dari mereka jatuh sakit.Kata Kunci : pengalaman berbudaya, syok budaya
The study aimed at investigating the cultural experiences that experienced by English teacher volunteers and the symptoms of culture shock faced by English teacher volunteers in Bumi Sehat’s Youth Center. The researcher used phenomenological method and qualitative approach in finding out the answer of the problems of the study. The data were taken from three English teacher volunteers through interview and questionnaire. The analysis reveals that there are ten cultural experiences that the English teacher volunteers experienced in Bumi Sehat’s Youth Center. The English teacher volunteers experienced the cultural experiences that refers to culture shock (physical, cognitive or behavior) when they were entering in a new culture or environment where was different with their home town. Those ten cultural experiences that experienced by English teacher volunteers are different food, two Balinese people problems, environment, transportation, cultural differences, sleep problem, depression, pace of life, and climate. On the other hand, English teacher volunteers were faced symptom of culture shock in first two week. All of the English teacher volunteers were felt homesick and one of them get sick.
