AN ANALYSIS OF TEACHERS STRATEGIES IN TEACHING SPEAKING AT THE TENTH GRADE OF VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS IN DENPASAR

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui strategi guru dalam mengajar berbicara di kelas 10 sekolah menengah kejuruan di Denpasar. Penelitian ini berkaitan dengan bagaimana guru merencanakan strategi mengajar berbicara dalam rencana pelaksanaan pembelajaran, bagaimana guru menerapkan strategi-strategi tersebut di dalam kelas, dan apa masalah yang dihadapi oleh guru dalam menerapkan strategi-strategi tersebut. Tempat penelitian ini dilaksanakan yaitu di tiga sekolah kejuruan di Denpasar pada jurusan pariwisata, yaitu: SMK Negeri 3 Denpasar, SMK Negeri 4 Denpasar, dan SMK Negeri 5 Denpasar. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif kualitatif yang melibatkan tiga guru bahasa Inggris yang mengajar siswa kelas 10 dari tiga sekolah kejuruan yang berbeda. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori strategi mengajar berbicara dari Harmer, Kelen, dan Bow. Data dikumpulkan melalui studi dokumen, daftar pengamatan, dan panduan wawancara. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa: (1) strategi yang digunakan oleh guru dari tiga sekolah kejuruan berbeda adalah role-play, discussion, games, reporting, picture describing, and presentation, (2) juga ditemukan bahwa kebanyakan dari ketiga guru tersebut menerapkan strategi yang sama untuk mengajarkan keterampilan berbicara, yaitu role-play dan discussion, (3) Ada beberapa masalah yang dihadapi oleh guru dalam menerapkan strategi. Masalahnya adalah pengelolaan waktu, perilaku siswa, kurangnya motivasi belajar dari siswa, dan strategi yang monoton yang digunakan oleh guru.Kata Kunci : strategi guru, penggajaran beribacara, sekolah menengah kejuruan
Abstract This research aimed at investigating the teachers’ strategies in teaching speaking at the tenth grade of vocational schools in Denpasar. It is concerned with how the teachers plan the strategies on lesson plan, how the teachers implement the strategies in the classroom, and what the problems encountered by teachers in implementing the strategies. The settings of this research were three vocational schools in Denpasar under the tourism department, namely: SMK Negeri 3 Denpasar, SMK Negeri 4 Denpasar, and SMK Negeri 5 Denpasar. This research was a descriptive qualitative which involves three English teachers who taught tenth grade students from three different vocational schools. This research used the theory of speaking strategies from Harmer, Kelen, and Bow. The data were collected through document study, observational checklist, and interview guide. The result revealed that: (1) the strategies used by the teachers from three different vocational schools were role-play, discussion, games, reporting, picture describing, and presentation, (2) it was also found that mostly the three teachers implemented the same strategies to teach speaking, that were role-play and discussion, (3) there were some problems encountered by teachers in implementing the strategies. They were time management, students’ behavior, lack of motivation from the students, and the monotonous strategy used by the teacher.
