Reading Comprehension Difficulties of Eighth Grade Students of SMP N 2 Singaraja in the 2018-2019 Academic Year

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki: (1) kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh siswa kelas delapan di SMP N 2 Singaraja dalam pemahaman membaca, (2) penyebab kesulitan yang dihadapi oleh siswa kelas delapan di SMP N 2 Singaraja dalam pemahaman membaca, dan (3) strategi yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris di SMP N 2 Singaraja untuk membantu siswa kelas delapan mengatasi kesulitan mereka dalam pemahaman membaca. Desain metode campuran digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Populasi penelitian ini terdiri dari 338 siswa kelas delapan dan 7 guru bahasa Inggris yang mengajar kelas delapan di SMP N 2 Singaraja. Sampel penelitian terdiri dari 124 kelas delapan dan 2 guru bahasa Inggris. Tes pemahaman membaca, panduan wawancara, dan lembar observasi adalah instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa kelas delapan menghadapi kesulitan dalam menentukan ide utama, mengidentifikasi informasi spesifik, mengidentifikasi referensi, dan mengidentifikasi makna kata-kata. Penyebab utama kesulitan pemahaman bacaan siswa adalah item kosakata yang tidak dikenal / tidak dikenal, sementara bagian yang panjang, waktu yang terbatas, dan kurangnya latihan membaca dan belajar bahasa Inggris dianggap sebagai yang lain. Selanjutnya, strategi yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris untuk membantu siswa kelas delapan mengatasi kesulitan dalam pemahaman membaca, termasuk: strategi pengulangan, strategi prediksi atau tebakan, strategi mengisyaratkan, strategi pemindaian, dan strategi membaca sekilas.Kata Kunci : EFL, kemampuan membaca, kesulitan, sekolah menengah pertama
This research was aimed at investigating: (1) the difficulties faced by the eighth grade students in SMP N 2 Singaraja in reading comprehension, (2) the causes of the difficulties faced by the eighth grade students in SMP N 2 Singaraja in reading comprehension, and (3) the strategies used by the English teachers in SMP N 2 Singaraja to help the eighth grade students solve their difficulties in reading comprehension. A mixed methods design was used in this research. The population of the research consisted of 338 students of the eighth grade and 7 English teachers teaching the eighth grade at SMP N 2 Singaraja. The samples of the research comprised of 124 eighth grades and 2 English teachers. Reading comprehension test, interview guide, and observation sheets were the instruments used to collect the data. The results show that the eighth grade students faced the difficulties in determining the main idea, identifying the specific information, identifying reference, and identifying the meaning of the words. The main cause for the students’ reading comprehension difficulty is unknown/unfamiliar vocabulary items, while lengthy passages, limited time, and lack of reading practice and studying English are considered as the other. Furthermore, the strategies used by the English teachers to help the eighth grade students solve the difficulties in reading comprehension, included: repetition strategy, predicting or guessing strategy, hinting strategy, scanning strategy, and skimming strategy.
