A STUDY ON CLASSROOM INTERACTION IN THE PROCESS OF ENGLISH TEACHING AND LEARNING AT CLASS VIII.14 IN SMP NEGERI 2 SINGARAJA

Abstract

Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif yang bertujuan untuk: (1) mengidentifikasi jenis interaksi yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris dan siswa selama proses belajar mengajar di kelas VIII.14 di SMP Negeri 2 Singaraja dan bertujuan (2) mengidentifikasi tujuan dari jenis-jenis interaksi yang digunakan selama proses belajar dan mengajar. Objek penelitian ini adalah interaksi guru dan siswa dalam proses belajar mengajar. Data yang berupa interaksi antara siswa dan guru bahasa Inggris dikumpulkan melalui tehnik rekam, observasi, dan interview. Kemudian, data yang berhasil dikumpulkan dianalisis dengan model analisis Sinclair dan Coulthard. Berdasarkan hasil analisis, ditemukan bahwa (1) terdapat enam jenis interaksi kelas yang digunakan oleh guru dan siswa dalam proses belajar mengajar, yakni: pertanyaan, arah, tanggapan, dorongan, pengabaian, dan pengakuan. dan (2) terdapat delapan tujuan dari dilakukanya jenis-jenis interaksi tersebut, yakni: elisitasi (el), pemeriksaan (ch), pengarahan (d), balasan (rep), komentar (com), tawaran (b), petunjuk (cl), nominasi (n) penerimaan (acc).

This is a descriptive qualitative study which aimed at describing: (1) the types of classroom interaction used by the English teacher and students during teaching and learning process at class VIII.14 in SMP Negeri 2 Singaraja and describing (2) the purposes of those types of classroom interaction during teaching and learning process. In order to analyze the data, the model of classroom interaction study, I-R-F, proposed by Sinclair and Coulthard theory was used to identify the classroom interaction. Some methods were used in collecting the data, such as: video recording during the classroom interaction, observation, and interview. According to the results of this study (1) six types of classroom interaction were used by the teacher and students in teaching and learning process, which consisted of Questions, Direction, Response, Prompt, Ignoring, Acknowledgment and (2) eight types of acts were produced to identify the purposes of the types of classroom interaction in the process of teaching and learning which consisted of Elicitation (el), Check (ch), Directive (d), Reply (rep), Bid (b), Clue (cl), Nomination (n), Accept (acc).
