THE USE OF PARTS STRATEGY IN IMPROVING STUDENTS’ READING COMPETENCY OF XI IPA 7 CLASS IN SMA NEGERI 6 DENPASAR IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2013/2014

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa melalui penggunaan strategi PARTS sebagai strategi mengajar. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas XI IPA 7 SMA Negeri 6 Denpasar yang terdiri atas 39 siswa, 20 laki-laki dan 19 perempuan. Penelitian ini merupakan Penelitian Tindakan Kelas yang dilaksanakan dalam dua siklus.Masing-masing siklus terdiri atas tiga sesi, di mana dua sesi digunakan untuk mengimplementasikan strategi PARTS dan satu sesi digunakan untuk mengevaluasi siswa. Data dalam penelitian ini dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan buku harian peneliti, tes, dan kuisioner. Kemudian data tersebut dianalisis secara kuantitatif dan kualitatif. Masalah yang muncul ditemukan dari hasil pre-test. Hasil pre-test menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata siswa 58.33 dan hanya 12,82% dari seluruh siswa yang mampu mencapai standar kentuntasan minimum yang disyaratkan sekolah, yaitu 75. Setelah siswa diberikan perlakuan dengan strategi PARTS di siklus pertama, nilai rata-rata siswa meningkat menjadi 70,51 dan 61,51% dari jumlah siswa mampu mencapai standar ketuntasan minimum. Sedangkan siswa yang masih menghadapi masalah dalam membaca dapat dibantu dalam siklus kedua. Nilai rata-rata siswa dalam tes membaca di siklus kedua adalah 79,87 dan seluruh siswa mampu mencapai standar ketuntasan minimum. Peningkatan nilai siswa tersebut menunjukkan bahwa pengimplementasian strategi PARTS dapat meningkatkan kemampuan membaca siswa.Kata Kunci : strategi PARTS, kemampuan membaca, Penlitian Tindakan Kelas
This study was aimed at improving students’ reading competency through the use of PARTS strategy. The subjects of this study were XI IPA 7 students of SMA Negeri 6 Denpasar which consisted of 39 students that included 20 females and 19 males. This research was in the form of classroom based action research which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of three sessions, in which two sessions were intended for implementing the PARTS strategy and one session was intended for evaluating the students. The data were collected by using researcher’s diary, test and questionnaire. Then the data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The existing problem was found from the result of pre-test. It was showed that the mean score was 58.33 and there were only 12.82% of the students could pass the standard passing score required by the school, which is 75. After the students were given the treatment of PARTS strategy in the first cycle, the mean score increased to 70.51 and 61.51% of the students could pass the standard passing score. Meanwhile reading problem that still faced by the rest of students could be overcome on cycle II. The mean score of reading test on cycle II was 79.87 and all of the students could pass the standard passing score. That improvement showed that the implementation of PARTS strategy can successfully improve students’ reading competency.
