The Contribution of Socioeconomic Status and Achievement Motivation on English Achievement A Study in Public Senior High Schools in Denpasar in Academic Year 2013/2014

Penelitian ini adalah penelitian korelasi dengan rancangan penelitian ex-post facto yang bertujuan untuk menguji (1) pengaruh antara status sosial ekonomi terhadap prestasi bahasa Inggris, (2) pengaruh antara motivasi berprestasi terhadap prestasi bahasa Inggris, dan (3) pengaruh antara status social ekonomi dan motivasi berprestasi terhadap prestasi dari siswa kelas XII SMA Negeri di Denpasar pada tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Rancangan penelitian ex-post facto¬ adalah rancangan penelitian yang menguji hubungan antara variable-variabel bebas dan sebuah variable terikat dengan (1) memilih sampel, (2) merancang dan mengembangkan kuisioner, (3) menyebar kuisioner, (4) menganalisis hasil yang diperoleh, dan (5) membuat kesimpulan. Penelitian ini dibatasi pada siswa kelas XII SMA Negeri pada semester pertama di Denpasar, yaitu SMA Negeri 1 Denpasar, SMA Negeri 2 Denpasar, SMA Negeri 3 Denpasar, SMA Negeri 4 Denpasar, SMA Negeri 5 Denpasar, dan SMA Negeri 8 Denpasar. Sampel dipilih dengan menggunakan teknik class random sampling yaitu 430 siswa di 12 kelas dari 6 sekolah tersebut. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis secara kuantitatif, yaitu analisis deskriftif dan inferensial Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa (1) tidak ditemukan pengaruh yang signifikan dari status sosial ekonomi terhadap prestasi bahasa Inggris siswa; (2) terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan dari motivasi berprestasi terhadap prestasi Bahasa Inggris siswa sebesar 9,2%; dan (3) terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan dari status sosial ekonomi dan motivasi berprestasi secara bersama-sama terhadap pretasi belajar siswa sebesar 9,82%.Kata Kunci : Motivasi Berprestasi, Prestasi Bahasa Inggris, Status Sosial Ekonomi
This study was a correlational study with ex-post facto research design, which aimed at examining (1) the contribution between socioeconomic status on English achievement, (2) the contribution between achievement motivation on English achievement, and (3) the contribution between socioeconomic status and achievement motivation on English achievement of the twelfth grade students of first semester of public senior high schools in Denpasar in academic year 2013/2014. Ex-post facto research design was a research design to investigate the correlation between independent variables and dependent variable by (1) selecting the sample, (2) designing and developing the questionnaires, (3) distributing the questionnaires, (4) analyzing the obtained data, and (5) drawing the conclusion. This study was restricted to the twelfth grade students of first semester at six public senior high schools in Denpasar, namely SMA Negeri 1 Denpasar, SMA Negeri 2 Denpasar, SMA Negeri 3 Denpasar, SMA Negeri 4 Denpasar, SMA Negeri 5 Denpasar, and SMA Negeri 8 Denpasar. The sample of the study was chosen by using class random sampling technique that was 430 students in 12 classes of six schools. The obtained data was analyzed quantitatively by using descriptive and inferential statistical analysis. This study discovered that: (1) there was no significant contribution of socioeconomic status on English achievement of the students; (2) there was a significant contribution of achievement motivation on English achievement of the students as much as 9.2%; and (3) there was a significant contribution of socioeconomic status and achievement motivation on English achievement of the students as much as 9.82%.
