USING SCRIPTED SONGS AS AN INNOVATIVE TEACHING STRATEGY FOR TEACHING ENGLISH FOR YOUNG LEARNERS

Abstract

Abstract Penelitian eksperimental ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan lagu-lagu kreasi sebagai sebuah strategi mengajar yang inovatif terhadap kompetensi berbahasa Inggris anak-anak. Melalui tekhnik cluster-random sampling, dua kelompok di dalam populasi dipilih menjadi sample dari penelitian ini. SD Negeri 3 Sulahan sebagai kelompok eksperimen, sementara SD Negeri 3 Susut sebagai kelompok kontrol. Untuk kelompok eksperimen, treatments yang diberikan adalah dengan menggunakan lagu-lagu kreasi. Dilain pihak, kelompok kontrol diajarkan dengan menggunakan strategi konvensional. Posttest diberikan kepada kedua kelompok saat pemberian treatments berakhir. Hasil dari posttest menunjukkan bahwa siswa di kelompok eksperimen mencapai hasil yang lebih baik dibadingkan dengan siswa di kelompok kontrol. Hal ini dibuktikan dengan nilai rata-rata dari kelompok eksperimen adalah 80.00 sedangkan nilai rata-rata dari kelompok kontrol adalah 72.00. Selain itu, hasil dari analisis dengan menggunakan t-test menunjukkan bahwa t-observed (to) adalah 5.456 pada derajat kebebasan 64. Nilai ini lebih besar dari t-critical value yaitu 1.9973 pada nilai alpha 0.05. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa alternative-hypothesis (Ha) diterima. Kesimpulannya, strategi mengajar dengan menggunakan lagu-lagu kreasi memberikan pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap pebelajar anak-anak. Hal ini dapat dilihat dari hasil belajar kelompok eksperimen yang lebih baik dibandingkan dengan kelompok kontrol. Hasil dari penelitian ini memiliki implikasi terhadap pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk pebelajar anak-anak (TEYL) khususnya dengan menggunakan strategi mengajar yang inovatif.

Abstract This experimental study was aimed to investigate whether there was a significant effect of using scripted songs as an innovative teaching strategy toward the students’ English competence. Through cluster random sampling technique, two groups within the population were chosen to become the samples of the study. SD Negeri 3 Sulahan was regarded as the experimental group, while SD Negeri 3 Susut was selected as the control group. For the experimental group, the treatments were given by means of Scripted Songs strategy. On the contrary, the control group was taught by using Conventional Teaching strategy. By the end of the treatments, the posttests were administered to check the students’ English competence. The result shows that the students in experimental group obtained better achievement than the students in control group. It was proven by the mean score of experimental group which was 80.00 while the mean score of control group was 72.00. Moreover, the result of t-test analysis showed that the t-observed (to) was 5.456 at the degree of freedom 64. It was higher than the t-critical value that was 1.9973 at level significance 0.05. It indicated that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted. In conclusion, the Scripted Songs strategy gave a significant effect toward the young learners’ English competence. It could be noticed that the students who were taught by using this strategy had better performance than those in control group. These findings have an implication on TEYL particularly on using innovative teaching strategy.
