AN ANALYSIS ON CODE-SWITCHING USED BY MALE AND FEMALE TEACHERS AS A TEACHING STRATEGY IN TEACHING LEARNING EFL AT SMP NEGERI 3 SUKASADA

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui alih kode yang digunakan oleh guru bahasa Inggris pria dan wanita di SMP Negeri 3 Sukasada. Subyek penelitian ini adalah guru laki-laki dan perempuan yang mengajar bahasa Inggris di SMP Negeri 3 Sukasada. Untuk mencapai tujuan penelitian, peneliti menggunakan desain deskriptif kualitatif. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah (1) perekam suara, (2) lembar observasi, dan (3) pedoman wawancara. Peneliti mengumpulkan data melalui observasi kelas menggunakan perekam suara digital. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa guru laki-laki dan perempuan menggunakan tiga jenis alih kode. Ketiga jenis tersebut adalah alih kode intra-sentensial (13% dan 5,7%), alih kode inter-sentensial (55,1% dan 62,3%), dan alih kode Interpersonal (31,9% dan 32%). Ada 5 fungsi alih kode yang digunakan oleh guru laki-laki. Fungsi-fungsi tersebut adalah emphasis, attention, clarification, sociolinguistics play, dan instruction. Fungsi yang paling dominan digunakan oleh guru laki-laki adalah fungsi clarification. Sementara itu, fungsi yang paling dominan digunakan oleh guru wanita adalah fungsi emphasis. Ada beberapa alasan guru menggunakan alih kode dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris. Alasan-alasan tersebut adalah kurangnya kemampuan bahasa Inggris yang dimiliki oleh siswa, kurangnya rasa percaya diri siswa saat berpartisipasi di dalam prosess pembelajaran, guru berusaha untuk membuat siswa lebih mudah menangkap materi yang diajarkan, untuk menekankan poin-poin tertentu pada materi pelajaran, dan membantu guru saat menyampaikan materi pelajaran.Kata Kunci : Alih kode, guru laki-laki dan perempuan
This research aimed at finding out code switching used by male and female English teachers of eighth grade at SMP Negeri 3 Sukasada. The subjects of this research were male and female teachers teaching English at SMP Negeri 3 Sukasada. To achieve the goal, the researcher used the qualitative descriptive design. The instruments used in this research were (1) tape recorder, (2) observation sheet, and (3) interview guide. The researcher collected the data through class observation using a digital tape recorder. The results of this study showed that both of male and female teachers used three types of code switching. Those were Intra-sentential code switching (13% and 5.7%), Inter-sentential code switching (55.1% and 62.3%), and Interpersonal code switching (31.9% and 32%). There were five functions used by male teacher. Those functions were emphasis, attention, clarification, sociolinguistics play, and instruction. The most dominant function used by male teacher was clarification function of code switching. Meanwhile, the most dominant function used by female teacher was emphasis function. There were several reasons of using code switching. Those reasons were the students had lack of registrar competence, students had lack of confidence to participate in teaching and learning process, teacher tried to make the students easier to catch the material, to emphasize particular point, and help the teacher easier to deliver the material.
