AN ANALYSIS OF METAPHOR USED IN THE NEWS ITEMS OF JAKARTA POST NEWSPAPER

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis metafora yang digunakan pada teks berita di koran Jakarta Post, (2) mengidentifikasi jenis metafora yang paling banyak digunakan, dan (3) mendeskripsikan bagaimana metafora digunakan di setiap segmen berita di koran Jakarta Post. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif. Objek penelitian ini adalah metafora. Subjek penelitian ini adalah empat koran Jakarta Post yang dipilih secara purposive dengan menggunakan teknik snowball. Dalam mengidentifikasi metafora, metode yang digunakan adalah MIP (Metaphor Identification Procedure). Peneliti, catatan, dan checklist digunakan sebagai instrumen dalam proses pengumpulan data. Data-data tersebut dianalisis secara deskriptif dengan menggunakan model Miles dan Huberman. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat enam jenis metafora yang digunakan pada teks berita di koran Jakarta Post yang meliputi (1) structural, (2) orientational, (3) ontological, (4) anthropomorphic, (5) animal, dan (6) synaesthesia mentaphor. Structural metaphor adalah jenis metafora yang paling banyak digunakan. Structural metaphor juga mendominasi di tiap segmen berita yaitu Headlines, Business Headlines, National, Archipelago, City, World, Business, World Business, Sports, Life Lines, People, dan Bali Daily.

This study aimed to (1) identify the kinds of metaphor used in the news items of the Jakarta Post newspapers, (2) identify which kind of metaphor that is mostly used, and (3) describe how the metaphors are used among the news segments in the Jakarta Post newspapers. This research was a qualitative study. The object of this study was metaphor. The subjects of the study were four Jakarta Post newspapers selected purposively by using snowball technique. In identifying the metaphor, the method used was MIP (Metaphor Identification Procedure). The researcher, notes, and checklists were used as the instruments in the data collection process. The data were analysed descriptively by using Miles and Huberman model. The results of this study showed that there were six kinds of metaphor used in the newspapers studied. They were (1) structural, (2) orientational, (3) ontological, (4) anthropomorphic, (5) animal, and (6) synaesthesia metaphor. Among those metaphors, structural metaphor was mostly used in the news items of the Jakarta Post newspapers. It was also dominantly used in each of the twelve news segments of the newspapers which included Headlines, Business Headlines, National, Archipelago, City, World, Business, World Business, Sports, Life Lines, People, and Bali Daily.
