DEVELOPING A CHARACTER BASED- ENGLISH PICTURE BOOK FOR THE FIFTH GRADE STUDENTS IN SD NO. 1 AMERTA BHUANA

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi dan mengembangkan sebuah buku bergambar berbahasa Inggris berdasarkan nilai karakter, untuk siswa kelas lima SD No. 1 Amerta Bhuana. Penelitian ini adalah salah satu model penelitian dan pengembangan yang mengadaptasi model dari Lee dan Owens (2004).Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah siswa keas lima SD No. 1 Amerta Bhuana. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan interview, kuisoner, dan expert judgments. Hasil interview dan kuisoner menunjukan bahwa nilai karakter dari siswa kelas lima SD No. 1 Amerta Bhuana perlu ditekankan melalui penggunaan buku bergambar, Nilai karakter tersebut adalah: bekerja keras, disiplin, menghargai orang lain, kejujuran, dan demokrasi. Hasil analisis yaitu ditemukan lima topik pelajaran bahasa Inggris untuk kelas lima yang sesuai dengan nilai-nilai karakter tersebut, yaitu: bagian-bagian rumah, aktivitas sehari-hari, menanyakan perasaan dan penampilan, deskripsi dari suatu kepribadian, dan belajar future tense. Hasil pengembangan buku bergambar berbahasa Inggris berdasarkan nilai karakter tersebut kemudian dievaluasi oleh guru bahasa Inggris SD No. 1 Amerta Bhuana dan dua orang dosen bahasa Inggris Undiksha. Dari hasil expert judgments diperoleh hasil akhir untuk nilai produk yang dikembangkan yaitu 85%, sehingga dikategorikan berada pada level bagus berdasarkan level kesuksesan pengembangan produk oleh Sudjana (2008). Oleh karena itu, buku bergambar berbahasa Inggris berdasarkan nilai karakter yang telah dikembangkan siap untuk digunakan oleh siswa kelas lima SD No. 1 Amerta Bhuana.Kata Kunci : TEYL, nilai karakter, buku bergambar.
This research attempted to identify and develop a good character based- English picture book for the fifth Grade Students of SD No. 1 Amerta Bhuana. This research was in the form of Research and Development (R&D) adapted from the model of Lee and Owens (2004). The subject of this research was the fifth grade students of SD No. 1 Amerta Bhuana. The data of this research were collected through interview, questionnaire, and expert judgments. The result of this study found that, some character values that need to be reemphasized through media are: hard work, discipline, respectful, honesty, and democratic. The researcher found that there were five topics that were appropriate to be inserted in the character based-English picture book such as: part of the house, daily activities, asking about feel and looks, describing personality, and learning future tense. The result of developed character based-English picture book was judged by the English teacher of SD No. 1 Amerta Bhuana and two lecturers of Ganesha University of Education. The result of the expert judgments was 85% or achieved the level of good criteria, based on the level of success proposed by Sudjana(2008). Therefore, the character based-English picture book is ready to be used.
