AN ANALYSIS OF CODE SWITCHING USED BY A TEACHER AS A TECHNIQUE OF TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE IN CLASS X IS4 OF SMA NEGERI 1 NEGARA IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2013/2014

PPenelitian descriptive qualitative ini bertujuan untuk menganalisa alih code (code switching) yang digunakan oleh seorang guru sebagai sebuah teknik mengajar Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing di kelas X IS4 SMA Negeri 1 Negara tahun ajaran 2012/2013. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah seorang guru Bahasa Inggris wanita yang mengajar kelas X IS4. Peneliatian ini adalah peneliatian deskriptif qualitatif. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah rekaman MP3, catatan dan lembar observasi. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan ada tiga tipe alih code (code switching) yang digunakan oleh guru yaitu intra-sentential code-switching (42,7%), inter-sentential code switching (25,7%), and inter-personal code switching (31,6%). Ada tiga fungsi dari alih kode (code switching) yang digunakan oleh guru yaitu menekankan(60,2%), menginstruksi (1,2%), mengklarifikasi(19,3%), fungsi sociolinguistik (1,2%), dan mendapatkan perhatian (18,1%). Alasan penggunaan alih code (code switching) yaitu untuk mendapatkan perhatian siswa, membuat lelucon, menjelaskan konsep, memberikan instruksi, membuat konsep dengan siswa.Kata Kunci : Alih Kode, Tipe Alih Kode, Fungsi Alih Kode, Alasan Alih Kode, Bahasa Inggris Sebagai Bahasa Asing
This descriptive qualitative study aimed at analyzing code switching used by a teacher as a technique of Teaching English as a Foreign Language in class X IS4 of SMA Negeri 1 Negara in the academic year 2013/2014. The subject of this study was a female English teacher of class X IS4. This study was a descriptive qualitative research. The instruments used in this study were MP3 recorder, a field note and an observation sheet. The result of this study showed that there were three types of code switching used by the teacher. They were intra-sentential code-switching (42.7%), inter-sentential code switching (25.7%), and inter-personal code switching (31.6%). There was five functions of code switching used by teacher, that are emphasis function (60.2%), instruction function (1.2%), clarification function (19.3%), Sociolinguistic play function (1.2%) and attention function (18.1%) . The reasons of using code switching were attracting the student’s attention, making a joke, explaining the concept, giving instruction, and establishing the contact with the students.
