A STUDY ON THE USE OF CODE SWITCHING AS A COMMUNICATIVE TEACHING STRATEGY BY THE ENGLISH TEACHERS AT SMK NEGERI 2 SINGARAJA IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2013/2014

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis jenis, fungsi, dan alasan penggunaan alih kode oleh guru Bahasa Inggris kelas XI di SMK Negeri 2 Singaraja pada tahun ajaran 2013/2014. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif yang menggunakan Modified Analytic Induction sebagai rancangan peenelitiannya. Data diperoleh melalui observasi di dalam kelas saat pelajaran berlangsung. Peneliti juga melakukan wawancara bagi setiap guru Bahasa Inggris kelas XI untuk kelengkapan penelitian. Data akumulasi menunjukkan bahwa jenis alih kode yang paling dominan digunakan oleh Guru Bahasa Inggris adalah intra-sentential code switching (39,5%), kemudian yang berikutnya adalah inter-sentential code switching (36,5%), dan yang paling jarang digunakan adalah inter-personal code switching (24,0%). Fungsi dari penggunakan alih kode adalah untuk meminta informasi lebih lanjut, menekankan informasi tertentu, meminta siswa mengklarifikasi jawabannya, memberikan instruksi, memberikan penjelasan yang lebih rinci, membenarkan pemahaman siswa, mengatur giliran menjawab, membenarkan jawaban siswa, memberikan kesempatan, mengklarifikasi jawaban yang benar, memberikan pertanyaan untuk mengetahui pengetahuan awal siswa, mengelola kelas, membuat lelucon, menanyakan hal-hal terkait materi, dan meminta pendapat. Alasan guru menggunakan alih kode adalah sebagai bahasa pengantar dan sebagai strategi pengajaran yang komunikatif, khususnya untuk meningkatkan pemahaman siswa, membantu guru untuk menarik perhatian siswa, serta membangun suasana nyaman di dalam kelas. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini, disarankan bagi guru untuk menggunakan alih kode sebagai strategi pengajaran komunikatif sehingga siswa mampu memahami materi pembelajaran dengan lebih baik.Kata Kunci : alih kode, strategi pengajaran komunikatif
This study aimed at analyzing the types of code switching, the functions of code switching, and the reasons of using code switching by the English teachers of grade XI at SMK Negeri 2 Singaraja in the academic year 2013/2014. It was a qualitative study which used Modified Analytic Induction as the design. The data was obtained through classroom observation. The researcher also did an interview to each English teacher in order to complete the data. The data accumulation showed that the most dominant type of code switching used by the English Teachers of grade XI is intra-sentential code switching (39.5%), and then followed by inter-sentential code switching (36.5%), and the last is inter-personal code switching (24.0%). The functions of using code switching were for asking further information, emphasizing certain information, asking for clarification, giving instruction, giving clear explanation, confirming students’ understanding, regulating turn taking, confirming students’ answer, giving chance, making clarification, giving brainstorming, managing the classroom, helping the teacher to make a joke, delivering question, and asking opinion. The reasons of using code switching were as an introductory language and as a communicative teaching strategy especially to increase students’ understanding, to help the teacher attracting students’ attention, and establishing a comfort atmosphere in the classroom. Based on the result of this study, it is suggested for the teacher to use code switching as a communicative teaching strategy in order to reach a better understanding of the students.
