A STUDY ON CODE SWTCHING USED BY EIGHTH GRADES ENGLISH TEACHERS AT SMP NEGERI 3 SINGARAJA IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2013/2014

Abstract

Penelitian kualitatif ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui penggunaan campur kode terutama oleh guru bahasa inggris di SMP Negeri 3 Singaraja. Penelitian ini berfokus pada jenis-jenis campur kode, alas an dibalik penggunaan campur kode, dan sikap dari guru yang menggunakan campur kode. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah guru bahasa inggris di SMP Negeri 3 Singaraja. Dari 4 guru yang mengajar kelas VIII, ada 3 guru yang dipilih. Metode pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah perekaman data, wawancara, dan observasi. Hasil dari analisis data yang dilakukan terdapat 272 ungkapan yang mengandung campur kode dari 876 ungkapan. Dari hasil analisi tersebut terdapat tiga jenis campur kode yang muncul yaitu intra-sentential, inter-sentential dan inter-personal. Dari ketiga jenis campur kode tersebut yang paling banyak muncul adalah intra-sentential code switching sebesar 82.36% (224 ungkapan), 10.29% (28 ungkapan) untuk inter-sentential dan 07.35% untuk inter-personal. Ada beberapa alasan dalam penggunaan campur kode yaitu untuk menunjukan hal-hal penting dalam pelajaran, membantu siswa untuk lebih mudah memahami pelajaran dan untuk mengalihkan topic pembelajaran. Dari semua alasan yang diberikan tersebut para guru menyatakan bahwa mereka memiliki sikap yang positive terhadap penggunaan campur kode selama itu digunakan dengan alasan yang jelas dan pasti.

This qualitative research was aimed at finding out the use of code switching, particularly by the teachers in SMP Negeri 3 Singaraja. It was concerned with the types of code switching, the reason underlying the use of code switching, and the attitude of the switcher toward code switching. The subject of this study was the teacher in SMP Negeri 3 Singaraja. From 4 teachers, three of them: teacher 1, teacher 3 and teacher 4, were selected purposively on the basis of their working experience as a teacher. The method used in collecting the data were: recording the data, interviewing the subject and observation. As a means of collecting data, the researcher used tape recorder and interview sheet. From the recorded data, 876 utterances were produced by the teacher, and the result of the analysis showed that there were three types of code switching occurred in the data: intra-sentential code switching, inter-sentential code switching, and inter-personal code switching. Among those type of code switching, intra-sentential code switching was the most dominant type of code switching occurred in the data: it was about 25.6% (224 utterances). Inter-sentential code switching was found about 3.2% (28 utterances) from the entire recorded utterances. Inter-personal code switching occurred about 2.3% (20 utterances). Behind the production of code switching, the broadcaster claimed that it was done to show off the important point of the lesson, to help students easier to catch the lesson, to switch the topic of the lesson. From those reasons they strongly gave positive attitude toward code switching especially when it was done accurately and under positive reasons.
