TECHNIQUES OF TEACHING READING FOR ENGLISH LITERACY BOOST OF FIRST GRADE STUDENTS OF NBBS

Literasi bahasa Inggris adalah keterampilan hidup yang penting yang menggunakan kompetensi membaca dan menulis sebagai keterampilan dasarnya dalam era global ini. Dengan kemampuan literasi yang baik, siswa akan memiliki kesempatan yang lebih baik untuk memiliki kehidupan yang lebih baik di masa depan. Namun, itu menjadi masalah yang luas saat ini di Indonesia bahwa literasi Bahasa Inggris siswa rendah dan mereka kebanyakan tidak memiliki keterampilan dasar membaca dalam bahasa Inggris. Hal ini disebabkan oleh kenyataan bahwa banyak guru masih bingung tentang cara mengajar membaca secara efektif terutama untuk pemula. Maka dari itu penelitian ini dimaksudkan untuk menggambarkan teknik mengajar membaca untuk meningkatkan literasi Bahasa Inggris bagi mereka siswa kelas satu sekolah dasar. Penelitian ini adalah bagian dari penelitian yang lebih besar yang dilakukan di North Bali Bilingual School (NBBS), sebuah sekolah nasional plus di Singaraja Bali Utara. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan peneliti sebagai instrumen utama. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas satu di NBBS. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa ada dua teknik utama membaca yang diterapkan seperti phonic approach dan the whole language approach dalam rangka meningkatkan literasi Bahasa Inggris siswa. Kedua teknik tersebut saling berkaitan satu sama lain dan terbukti efektif untuk meningkatkan literasi siswa tidak hanya dalam membaca, tetapi juga dalam berbicara. Para siswa ini selalu bahagia dan ceria di dalam kelas karena pendekatan yang diterapkan memberikann pembelajaran yang menyenangkan di kelas.Kata Kunci : teaching reading, elementary school, NBBS
English literacy is an essential life skill which uses reading and writing competencies as its fundamental skills in this global era. With good literacy skills, students will have better chances to have better life in the future. However, it becomes a wide issue nowadays in Indonesia that students’ English literacy is low and they mostly do not have basic reading skills in English. This is assumed to be caused by the fact that many teachers are still confused on how to teach reading effectively especially for beginners. This paper is, therefore, intended to describe techniques of teaching reading for boosting English literacy for those who are in the first grade of elementary school. The study was part of a bigger study conducted at North Bali Bilingual School (NBBS), a national plus school in Singaraja North Bali. This study used descriptive qualitative research with a researcher as the main instrument. The subject of this study was the first grade students of NBBS. The result has showed that there are two major reading techniques implemented such as phonic approach and the whole language approach in order to improve the students’ English literacy. The two techniques are complimenting each other and found to be effective to improve the students’ literacy not only in reading but also in speaking. The students are always happy and cheerful in the classroom because the approaches implemented bring joyful learning in the classroom.
