Developing Supplementary English Material for Average Learners of the Eighth Grade at SMP N 1 Mengwi to Support the Implementation of Kurikulum 2013

Penelitian pengembangan ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan pengembangan materi tambahan untuk pelajaran bahasa Inggris dan mengetahui kualitas dari produk yang dikembangkan oleh peneliti. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah guru bahasa Inggris yang mengajar di kelas delapan dan siswa berkemampuan sedang kelas delapan di SMP N 1 Mengwi. Sedangkan, objek yang digunakan adalah materi tambahan tersebut. Desain dari penelitian ini mengikuti tujuh langkah yang diadaptasi dari Sugiyono (2008). Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan teknik analisis dokumen dan wawancara dengan menggunakan beberapa instrumen, seperti catatan, perekam suara dan angket wawancara. Temuan awal menunjukkan bahwa pengembangan materi tambahan untuk pelajaran bahasa Inggris sangat dibutuhkan karena tidak semua aktivitas pada buku pelajaran bahasa Inggris yang digunakan sesuai dengan tingkat kemampuan siswa. Sedangkan, temuan kedua menunjukkan bahwa ada tujuh topik dan delapan nilai pendidikan karakter yang harus diperkenalkan di kelas delapan semester dua. Berdasarkan hasil dari lembar uji ahli, konten validitas produk menunjukkan nilai 1.00 yang mengindikasikan bahwa produk memiliki validitas yang sangat tinggi. Produk ini juga memenuhi kriteria materi yang sangat baik yang ditunjukkan dengan nilai ≥ 225. Selain itu, siswa menunjukkan perilaku positif selama uji coba produk terbatas. Mereka setuju bahwa produk yang dikembangkan memiliki bacaan yang mengandung budaya lokal, gambar yang menarik serta ragam aktivitas yang terdapat di setiap bab.Kata Kunci : differentiated instruction, materi tambahan, siswa berkemampuan sedang
This research and development (R&D) study aimed at describing the development of supplementary English material and measuring the quality of the product. The subject used in this study were the English teacher who teaches the eighth graders and average learners of the eighth grade at SMP N 1 Mengwi. Meanwhile, the object was the supplementary English material itself. When developing the product, the research design used in this study following the seven steps adapted from Sugiyono (2008). To collect the data, an interview and document study were conducted by using some instruments like field note, voice recorder and interview guide. The first finding showed that there was a need to develop supplementary English material for average learners of the eighth grade since not all activities in the English textbook were suitable for their level. The second finding showed that there were seven topics and eight educational character values which should be developed in the second semester. Additionally, the result from expert judgment sheet revealed that the content validity of the product was 1.00, which indicated that it had a very high validity. It was also categorized as excellent material in which the score was ≥ 225. Moreover, students showed their positive attitudes during the limited field trial of the product. They agreed that the product had covered local culture based-reading materials, provided with colorful pictures and various activities in each chapter.
