Development of Character Based Language Learning Games for 1st Grade Junior High School Students in English as Foreign Language in SMP Negeri 4 Singaraja

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan permainan pembelajaran bahasa Inggris berbasis karakter beserta buku manual penggunaannya. Subjek dari penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas VII di SMP Negeri 4 Singaraja. Penelitian ini merupakan sebuah penelitian pengembanan (Research and Development). Data dikumpulkan menggunakan in-depth interview dan kuisioner yang diberikan baik kepada guru maupun siswa. Data kemudian diolah secara kualitatif sebagai dasar untuk merumuskan permainan pembelajaran berbasis karakter. Hasil dari penelitian ini berhasil mengembangkan tiga jenis permainan pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris berbasis karakter. Permainan tersebut ialah Word Bricks, Race Words dan Snake and Signs. Hasil uji validasi dari permainan dari para ahli mendapat katergory permainan yang bagus. Sedangan buku manual permainan tersebut mendapat kategory excellent. Hasil uji validasi dari guru untuk buku manual permainan tersebut menunjukan bahwa produk yang dikembangkan cukup baik. Hasil uji lapangan terhadap siswa menunjukan siswa menjadi bersemangat dan termotivasi untuk belajar Bahasa Inggris melalui permainan tersebut. Hasil uji lapanganpun menunjukan adanya karakter – karakter yang berhasil tumbuh pada siswa ketika bermain permainan tersebut.

This study aimed to develop the language learning games for English language with character base with its manual book. The subjects of this study were the 1st grade junior high school students in SMP Negeri 4 Singaraja. This research employed research and development. The data of the study were collected based on in-depth interview, observation sheet and questionnaire that was given to teacher and students. The obtained data were analysed qualitatively as the basic for developing character based language learning games. The result of the study developed three different character based language learning games. Those are Word Bricks, Race Words and Snake and Signs games. The result of validation score of the games from experts shows excellent belongs and good games. Meanwhile the book got excellent. The validation score from teacher showed that the games belong to good games and good book. The result of field try-out for students show that students were excited and motivated to learn English through playing games. The field try out also showed that the characters were starting to emerge in students who play the games.
