A Descriptive Study of Language Use in Teaching English as a Foreign Language Conducted By Female and Male English Teachers of SMK PGRI 1 Singaraja

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan penggunaan bahasa oleh guru perempuan dan guru laki-laki dalam pengajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa asing di SMK PGRI 1 Singaraja. Masalah yang di angkat dalam penelitian ini adalah: 1) karakteristik dari penggunaan bahasa oleh guru perempuan dan guru laki-laki, 2) dampak dari penggunaan dari karakteristik bahasa yang dimiliki oleh guru perempuan dan guru laki-laki. Penelitian ini menggunakan 1 guru bahasa inggris perempuan dan 1 guru bahasa inggris laki-laki sebagai subyeknya. Penelitian ini merupakan sebuah penelitian deskriptif kualitatif, dengan menggunakan instrumen manusia, rekaman dari hasil kegiatan belajar mengajar dan wawancara sebagain instrumennya. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat beberapa karakteristik dari penggunaan bahasa yang dimiliki oleh guru bahasa inggris perempuan, yakni guru bahasa Inggris perempuan menggunakan bahasa yang kooperatif, tidak singkat, dan cenderung menggunakan bahasa Indonesia informal dalam proses belajar mengajar. Sedangkan karakteristik dari penggunaan bahasa yang dimiliki oleh guru laki-laki yakni, tidak kooperatif, singkat, dan cenderung menggunakan bahasa Indonesia formal dalam proses belajar mengajar. Dampak dari penggunaan karakteristik bahasa yang dimiliki oleh guru bahasa inggris perempuan adalah siswa lebih aktif dalam kegiatan pembelajaran, tetapi kecenderungan mereka untuk menghormati guru cenderung kurang. Di sisi lain, dampak dari penggunaan karakteristik bahasa yang dimiliki oleh guru laki-laki adalah, siswa cenderung tidak terlalu akif dalam proses pembelajaran, namun rasa hormat yang mereka miliki kepada guru laki-laki cenderung lebih tinggi.Kata Kunci : gender, bahasa, pengajaran bahasa inggris sebagai bahasa asing
This research aimed at describing the characteristic of language use conducted by female and male English teacher at SMK PGRI 1 Singaraja. The problems raised in this research were, 1) the characteristic of language use of female and male English teacher, 2) the impacts of the use of the language use characteristic of female and male English teacher. This research used one female English teacher and one male English teacher as its subjects. This research is categorized as a qualitative research, which used human instrument, recording of teaching and learning process, observation sheet and interview guide as its instruments. The result of this research revealed that there were some characteristics of language use possessed by the female English teacher, which were more cooperative, less brief and tended using informal Indonesian in the teaching and learning process. Meanwhile, the characteristics of language use possessed by the male English teacher was less cooperative, brief, and tended using formal Indonesian in the teaching and learning process. The impact of the use of the language use characteristics of the female English teacher was students was more active in learning process, yet their tendency to respect their teacher was less. The impact of the use of the language use characteristics of the male English teacher was students were not active in the learning process, yet their tendency to respect their teacher was high.
