ANALYZING ENGLISH TEXTBOOK ENTITLED “BAHASA INGGRIS SMA/MA/SMK/MAK KELAS X SEMESTER 1” USING LITTLEJOHN’S FRAMEWORK

Absrak Penelitian analisis deskriptif ini bertujuan untuk (1) mendeskripsikan fitur eksplisit buku ‘Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X Semester 1’ (2) menjelaskan nilai pedagogik buku tersebut dan (3) meneliti kelebihan dan kekurangannya dilihat dari fitur explicit dan nilai pedagogiknya. Objek penelitian ini adalah buku ‘Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X Semester 1’ yang merupakan materi pembelajaran dipersiapkan oleh Kementrian Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan sebagai salah satu langkah implementasi Kurikulum 2013. Teori analysis yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah teori Littlejohn (1992). Teori ini terdiri dari analisis aspek fisik dan tugas-tugas yang ada dalam buku. Physical Analysis Sheet dan Task Analysis Sheet digunakan sebagai instrument dalam penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa buku yang dianalisis dalam penelitian ini (1) merupakan buku bilingual yang memiliki fitur eksplisit seperti full color printing, daftar isi, halaman, serta delapan jenis aktivitas umum yang dimuat dalam setiap bab dan petunjuk penggunaan yang dijabarkan dalam buku guru (2) memiliki tiga nilai pedagogik yaitu: (a) fokus pada tugas tertulis berupa kata-kata, kalimat, atau frasa yang berhubungan dengan penggunaan, arti, maupun struktur bahasa (b) lebih memfokuskan kegiatan yang menekankan arti bahasa yang digunakan daripada aturan bahasanya (c) lebih menekankan pada tugas-tugas yang membutuhkan siswa untuk bekerja sendiri daripada kelompok ataupun sebangku, dan (3) memiliki tujuh kekurangan (tiga dari segi fitur eksplisit, 4 dari nilai pedagogik) dan 7 kelebihan (4 dari segi fitur eksplisit, 3 dari nilai pedagogik).Kata Kunci : Kata Kunci: Analisis buku, Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X Semester 1’, Teori Littlejohn
Abstract This descriptive analysis study aimed at (1) describing the explicit nature of the English textbook ‘Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X Semester 1’ (2) explain its pedagogic values, and (3) examine its strengths and weaknesses viewed from its explicit nature and pedagogic values. The object of this study is the English textbook ‘Bahasa Inggris SMA/MA/SMK/MAK Kelas X Semester 1’ which is a prepared materials for English class of tenth grade Senior High School students from the Ministry of Education and Culture as one step implementation of Kurikulum 2013. The analysis framework used in this study was proposed by Littlejohn (1992). The framework consists of the analysis of physical aspect and tasks in the textbook. Physical Analysis Sheet and Task Analysis Sheet were used as the instruments. The result of the analysis showed that the textbook under study (1) is a bilingual book which has some explicit features like full color printing, content list, page number, and eight kinds of activities used in every chapter (2) has three pedagogic values: (a) mostly focuses on written tasks in form of individual words, sentence, or phrases which are related to language use, meaning, or structure (b) focus on tasks that emphasize meaning rather than form or structure (c) emphasizes more on individual tasks than pair or group work and (3) has seven strength (3 from explicit nature, 4 from pedagogic values) and seven weaknesses (4 from explicit nature, 3 from pedagogic values).
