THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SHADOWING TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE STUDENT’S LISTENING SKILL

Abstract


A language is a system for communicating our ideas and feelings weather it is using sounds, gestures, using signs or marks. Listening is one of the important skills in learning a language. It comes before reading, writing, and speaking. Most of students get difficulty in learning a foreign language especially English language. Shadowing is one of technique that can be applied in classroom activities especially in listening class to make the students easier to understand what the speaker says. This classroom action research was generally to know whether or not shadowing technique can improve students listening skill. It was also to know: (1) Lecturer’s activities, (2) The students ‘activity, (3) The students ‘response during the implementation of the shadowing technique in listening class activities. The subjects were 17 students of the first semester of Accounting Major in Triatma Mulya University in academic year 2020/2021. The students’ listening skill improved after the implementation of shadowing technique. It can be seen from the mean score, from 73.2 in cycle one to 76.0 in cycle two. The percentage of students passing the minimum criteria also improved from 59% to 78%. It can be concluded that shadowing could improve students ‘listening skill.
